If you haven't, you really shouldit's a bit of a grind, but commit to a single character and get them to the power level where you're reliably making huge gains. At the tier I'm playing, a run is successful if I complete the dragon, win with about 300k gold, and also have anywhere from 150500 ore, depending on imp luck.
I know enemy patterns, experience rewards, gold/ore drops, that's all the same in new game plus. Since you can get pretty close to finishing upgrades in a regular new game, though, what other ways are there to power up your character? So, if you have 0 gold in town, tax is 0%. If you have 5000 gold in town, the tax might be like 40%, more or less depending on your town upgrades. This is just my impression. Keep your money only if you want the church upgrades. I believe it is based on how much money your town currently has.

I am sure that the popular, highly competeitive "Heroes of Hammerwatch" scene isn't going to be undone because a couple people got tired of grinding ore in order to purchase upgrades that have to also be earned through an agonizingly slow XP gain system. The game is badly gated on ore and XP.

What to you mean, the town progress is the same for all the party members. The host upgrades his town, which is used for the party, but the guests also get the same amount as the host and can immediatly use the ore in their singeplayer runs. The guests town gets the same amount of unlocks as the host. Only character unlocks are gated i believe. 1.
