The metal is currently trading around 129 a ton, and has largely held above the key 100aton threshold this year. China, which produces more than half the world's steel, sparked alarm through the iron ore industry last year when it created China Mineral Resources Group, the new statebacked firm trying to boost its sway over prices.
Iron ore mining methods vary by the type of ore being mined. Currently, there are four main types of iron ore deposits, depending on the mineralogy and geology of the ore deposits. These are magnetite, titanomagnetite, massive hematite, and pisolitic ironstone deposits. For taconite iron ores, mining iron ore begins at ground level.
The process begins by removing the topsoil from the area to be mined. This soil is then replaced and compacted to make sure that there is no waterlogging or runoff. The next step is to drill holes into the rock, so that explosives can be inserted. The explosives are set off, and the iron ore is blasted out of the rock.
